Art’s Gift For Mom – Phyllis Comforts the Sleeping Skunk

Phyllis’s Skunk Comforting

In a few minutes the skunk was sleeping quietly, Hank slid the jar from the skunk’s head and examined the sleeping creature; he appeared to be unharmed by his adventures.

He asked the Doctor, “How long will he be out?”  Doctor Chenry’s answer was matter of fact, “I have no idea, it’s the first time I’ve ever given a sedative to a (four-legged) skunk.” Hank smiled as he put the skunk back in the box and handed it to Art with instructions,  “Take him out to the edge of the woods and leave him.”

Phyllis was watching and knew what was probably going to happen. She moved to the back of the house and watched to see if Art would come into her view. Soon she could see him carrying the box to the edge of the woods.  Art took the skunk out of the box and held him the limp form for a moment, petting him gently. Then he carefully laid him on the ground. Phyllis marked the spot and watched as Art returned to the front yard where Doctor Chenry was concluding their business relating to Art’s care.

Art arrived in time to see his father hand the Doctor some money, Art hated that he had cost his father so much.  It was humiliating, to want so much to be independent and grown up and have to have someone else pay your bills.

As the Doctor drove out of the yard he waved at Art with a friendly smile, he had enjoyed this little adventure and would no doubt tell the story of his “Skunk Rescue” at the next medical convention he attended.

Hank was smiling too, and he stepped toward Art put his arm around Art’s neck and asked, “Did it go alright?’ Art responded,  ”OK.“

Hank pulled Art close as he said, ”We have some work to do at the shop.“ Art was not at all eager to go back down there but  walked silently along knowing that it could not be all that bad if his dad was with him.

Phyllis saw where they were headed and slipped out the kitchen door, ran across the field to the edge of the woods. She was determined to find the skunk and in a few minutes she located the sleeping creature. When she saw him she said out loud to no one, ”He is so cute.“ She sat down beside him gently picked him up and cradled him in her lap. She stroked his head and rubbed his ears and suddenly longed to take him back to the house and make him and pet.
